Activities

Activities at Wina are about noticing — walking, paddling, watching, listening. This is not a Big Five safari. It is an invitation to intimately experience an intact ecosystem and understand why it matters.

Walking, Running & Cycling

Unscripted Wildlife Encounters

Explore over 20km of trails that cross a mesmerising mix of forest and floodplain — home to sitatunga, pangolins, and bird species unique to this corner of Zambia. Start with the paths around the crater, then set off on longer expeditions through landscapes that have changed little for millennia. Bikes are available to hire for those who want to cover more ground.

Guests explore using our maps and trail signs. Guided walks are available on request.

River Journeys & Fishing

The Zambezi's First Whispers

Float down the pristine West Lunga River through riverine forest alive with birdlife and the call of fish eagles. Canoes and inflatable boats are available to hire, lifejackets included. In the rainy season the river spreads gently across the Wina plains, ideal for families and younger adventurers.

The West Lunga is one of Zambia’s best-kept fishing secrets, holding tiger fish and bream for those who take the time to find them. Bring your own gear, or ask what we can arrange.

Birdwatching

A Living Tapestry

More than 170 species have been recorded at Wina — from rare endemic species to seasonal migrants. The West Lunga floodplain and surrounding forest make this one of Zambia's most rewarding birding destinations for those willing to find it.

Micro Safaris

The World Underfoot

Collage showing nature activities like identifying flowers and plants.

Wina's ecosystem rewards the curious. Guests who slow down and look closely (adults need training, children are naturals!) often discover an unexpected world — insects, fungi, and small creatures that hold everything else together. Ask us what's active during your visit.

Game Drives

Chasing the Golden Hours

Our diverse routes are accessible anytime, and most dramatic around dawn and dusk, when the landscape shifts and wildlife is most active. Catching the sunset out on a drive, or getting back to enjoy it on your private deck is always a dilemma. Self-drive using our maps and signage, or arrange a guided drive with a Wina team member.

Day Trips

Mini Expeditions Beyond the Property

Jump in your 4x4 — or hire ours — for a day out in one of Zambia's least-visited corners. Grab a packed lunch and set off north to explore. Highlights include:

  • The source of the Zambezi River.

  • Kalene Hill — hike to the top of this historic hill.

  • The Chitunta Plains — vast open grasslands with rare birdlife.

  • Lwakela waterfalls and the Zambezi cascade at Chiyesu.

  • To the west, Lake Chibesha — a hidden lake inside a vast forest.
